Playing poker online has become a global phenomenon. When poker can be played from the comfort of ones home then why go elsewhere. The growth in online poker has led to a proliferation of online poker rooms as well. Hence choosing an online poker room requires careful consideration.

The player cannot carry out detailed due diligence of the online poker room because he does not have the time or resources. Therefore he should depend on the authority that has issued the license to the online poker room. Some jurisdictions are more reputed for the checks that they carry out before issuing licenses. These checks involve ascertaining the integrity and the financial capacity of the owners and the randomness and correctness of the poker software. Some of the reputed jurisdictions are Kahnawake, Antigua, Gibraltar, Alderney and Isle of Man. Players should not wager at unlicensed online poker rooms or those that do not display valid licenses.

There are a number of poker variants, which are played with different stakes and betting structures. The player has to ensure that his preferred choices are available at the online poker room. Usually all online poker rooms offer cash games in Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Seven Card Stud. If the player wants to play the other variants then he would have to look around. Similarly the No Limit betting structure is more commonly available that the Limit or Pot Limit betting structures.

One of the most important factors in choosing an online poker room is the rake. The rake is the amount taken from each pot by the online poker room. In most online poker room the rake would depend on the poker variant, the stakes and the betting structure. The player must be clear as to which parameters he is interested in and compare the rakes for only those parameters across online poker rooms. Since the rake is the recurring cost the player has to pay it makes sense in choosing reputed online poker rooms with the lowest rakes even if it means forgoing larger bonuses and more attractive promotions.

Many players join online poker rooms to participate in the tournaments on offer. Broadly the tournaments can be divided into two types. Some tournaments are freerolls or have low buy ins but offers smaller prize pools. Other poker tournaments have larger buy ins and larger prize pools. The player has to be clear about his level of risk and return and find an online poker room that caters to it. If the player is interested in participating in live land based poker tournaments he should look for poker rooms that offer packages to such poker rooms as prizes in online tournaments and promotions.

Liquidity is another consideration that players have to keep in mind while choosing online poker rooms. Liquidity refers to the number of players wagering in cash games at any time. Players at poker rooms with greater liquidity find it easier to get tables with their choice of games and stakes. Also in the long run greater liquidity leads to lower rakes.

Texas holdem is the most popular variation of the game of poker. There are also some variations in the game of Texas holdem when it comes to the betting limits. There are limit, pot limit, and no limit variations of the betting structure.

Limit Texas holdem – In limit Texas holdem the size of the bets are structured and always the same, one amount for betting rounds before the flop and after the flop and another amount for betting on the turn and the river.

Pot limit Texas holdem – In pot limit Texas holdem there is a minimum bet amount but you can bet more, up to the maximum which is the total amount of money that is in the pot at the time of your bet.

No limit Texas holdem – In no limit Texas holdem there are minimum bet amounts but there are no maximum bet amounts other than table stakes, which means you can bet up to the amount of chips that you presently have on the table.

When a new table starts up each player is dealt a single card face up and the person with the high card starts out with the ‘Dealer’ button. The dealer button determines the order in which the cards are dealt and the betting action takes place. This button moves in a clockwise direction one seat at a time after each hand.

The first two players to the right of the dealer button must place a bet before the cards are dealt. Since they are betting before they have seen their cards these bets are called ‘blinds’. The player immediately to the right of the dealer button must put up an amount equal to half of a bet and this is called the ‘small blind’. The player immediately to the right of the small blind must put up a full bet and this is called the ‘big blind’.

After the small and big blind are posted, each player is dealt 2 cards. After these cards are dealt a round of betting begins with the betting action starting with the player to the immediate right of the big blind. Players have the option of calling the bet, folding their hand, or raising. When the action goes around the table the two blinds have to act on their hands and they have the same options of calling, raising, or folding. If there was not any raise then the big blind will also have the option of checking.

After the first round of betting has finished there are 3 cards dealt face up in the center of the table. These are ‘community cards’ that any player at the table can use to make a hand. The 3 cards are called the ‘flop’. On this, and all future betting rounds, the action begins with the player to the immediate right of the dealer button.

After the second round of betting another community card is dealt face up on the table and this is called the ‘turn’ card. A betting round takes place in the same manner as on the previous round.

After the third round of betting the final community card is dealt face up on the table and this is called the ‘river’ card. If more than one player remains after the final round of betting then there is a showdown to determine the best and winning hand to take the pot. The remaining players can use the two cards in their hand and the five community cards on the table, or ‘board’, to make the best possible hand.

Texas holdem uses a regular 52 card deck. There is no joker. The ace is the highest card but it can be used at the top of a straight, A K Q J 10, or at the bottom of a straight 5 4 3 2 A. Hand values from best to worst are:

•	Royal Flush
•	Straight Flush
•	Four of a Kind
•	Full House
•	Flush
•	Straight
•	Three of a Kind
•	Two Pair
•	One Pair
•	High Card

ESPN has announced expanded coverage of the 2011 World Series of Poker (WSOP). ”Days 3 through 8 of the WSOP main event — scheduled for July 14-19 — will feature 34 hours of “live” poker on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3.com featuring unedited play and hole cards.” This change follows the successful “live” broadcast of the final table of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure on ESPN2. Many in the poker world applauded the PCA coverage for giving a sense of the full meta game being played between the two final players in heads-up action. The hope is that even the casual viewer will see how the flow of the game reaches to the climactic hands.

“The 30-minute delay coverage on ESPN2 (and simulcast on ESPN3.com) will only include hole cards postflop. There will be two feature tables, and coverage will shift between the tables every 30 minutes, but any “all-in and call” situations will be included.” Previously, the highly edited WSOP coverage focused almost exclusively on decisive hands. This gave the average viewer a skewed view of poker as a game of only huge hands and big plays. The real truth may show insight into the thoughts and decisions it truly takes to be a champion at the skill game of poker. Poker purists will laud this change, but the public will need to imbrace it to prompt ESPN to continue the practice.

ESPN will also televise three events besides the WSOP Main Event. The WSOP Grudge Matches are made for TV rematches of famous Heads Up matches from previous WSOP Main Events. Also telecast will be the $25,000 Heads-Up World Championship and the $50,000 Poker Players’ Championship.
